Nutrisystem is one of the earliest meal delivery service providers. It is only recently that healthy home delivered meals have attained huge popularity among the masses. People are waking up to the benefits offered by consumption of healthy and balanced food on a regular basis. This is one of the reasons for the popularity of Nutrisystem. A short history of Nutrisystem

Nutrisystem has its headquarters in Pennsylvania, in Fort Washington. It has created its own niche as a commercial weight loss meal and product supplier. In the past, it only provided counseling for weight loss. Its products were sold across the counter in physical stores and centers. The journey was started by Harold Katz, a resident of Philadelphia, when he was 34 years old. He struck upon this business idea after witnessing his mother’s fight against obesity. Without even a college degree to his name, Katz made a weight loss module that became path breaking in the health and fitness community.

The very first Nutrisystem center opened close to Philadelphia in Willow Grove. Many additional centers were added as franchises and the company earned a spot among the top hundred fast growing companies in America. Public expansion happened in the year 1982 and it became a $300 million public behemoth. The company went into Huntington with a $2 million building after this cash boom. In the 80’s Nutrisystem had a presence in all fifty states of America with approximately close to five hundred centers for weight loss. Revenues were doubled and the company diversified into other businesses and products. However, these activities proved unprofitable for Nutrisystem.

The company structure changed in the period between 1985-86 when Katz was bought out and a new CEO hired. The company went private and set up almost two thousand centers for weight loss in all with revenues totaling $764 million. The time was ripe for a fresh change with a series of lawsuits in the years to follow. The company went totally online as a dotcom organization in the year 1997 and the rest is history.

Nutrisystem decided to collaborate with QVC and sold products on television apart from setting up a fabulous online system. The website was formally launched in the year 1999. Alongside, live counseling became a pivotal part of the system to reach out to more customers. The company started specializing in door to door delivery and is now endorsed by celebrities. It also has its own line of commercials and a burgeoning network of happy and satisfied customers. In today’s cutthroat times, Nutrisystem has managed to stay relevant and is looking at even more innovations in the future.
